A third of all data loss is caused by problems with backups

For any CEO of a small to medium-sized business, the prospect of losing access to your company’s data—even for a brief period—can be daunting. Such an incident can feel akin to a horror movie, fraught with potential consequences.

Data backup tools are designed to create secure copies of your critical information and store them safely. In the event of data loss, recovery tools should ideally restore your files from these backups. However, it’s crucial to understand that merely having backup and recovery systems in place doesn’t guarantee the safety of your data.

Recent reports reveal that a significant number of backup tools fall short of their intended reliability. Alarmingly, one-third of all data loss incidents are attributed to backup-related issues, with many businesses discovering that their data has been lost or corrupted when they attempt recovery.

Moreover, businesses face an escalating threat from ransomware—a malicious software that locks users out of their files, demanding a ransom for access. The same report indicated that half of the organizations utilizing backup tools ultimately resorted to paying ransoms, as it was often quicker than relying on their own recovery processes. Even more concerning, only a small fraction of those who paid the ransom successfully recovered all their data.

This raises a pivotal question: Why do many businesses find their backup tools unreliable?

The answer often lies in improper setup and maintenance. Even when backup systems are initially configured correctly, they require ongoing verification to ensure they continue to function as intended. Additionally, many older backup solutions struggle to keep pace with the sophisticated nature of modern cyber threats.

Establishing and maintaining an effective backup system can be a complex undertaking. This is where IT experts can play a vital role. We ensure your backup tools operate optimally every day and can implement additional safeguards, such as Continuous Data Protection (CDP). This advanced method continuously saves changes to your files, enabling you to restore your data to a precise moment just before any incident occurs.
